They say
that those who do nothing
but deplore their plight,
deserve their condition.
My younger self
would have disagreed,
that surely no one
chooses their lot in life,
that we are all just
victims of circumstance.
But I am much wiser now,
and I see that we
have more power
than we have been led to believe.
To see within your life
all that needs to change,
all that adversely affects you,
all that does not better you,
and to sit idly by
and do nothing but bemoan
your lot,
then you are just as responsible
for your misery
as those you blame for it.
We are masters of our own fate,
and you must act on your own behalf,
because if you do not?

Someone else will.
